BHP Agrees to $72 Million Settlement in Australian Samarco Class Action

Reported about 13 hours ago

BHP has settled a shareholder class action related to the 2015 Fundão tailings dam collapse for A$110 million (approximately $72 million), pending approval from the Federal Court of Australia. The lawsuit, which was filed in 2018, represented investors who purchased BHP shares before the disaster. BHP has not admitted any wrongdoing and expects to recoup most of the settlement amount from its insurers. This settlement follows a Brazilian court's decision that cleared BHP and Vale of criminal liability for the incident, which caused 19 deaths and extensive environmental damage.
