Bhutan director says no to Oscars, then changes mind

Bhutanese director Pawo's films 'Bhutanese Classroom' and 'Bhutan Has No Guns' made it to the Oscars, with the latter being selected in the top 15 for Best International Feature. Initially not planning to enter the Oscars race, distributor Yao Jingyu pushed for submission, leading to Bhutan's first Oscar nod. Despite Pawo's reluctance, both films were appreciated by the Oscars voters, showcasing his unique approach and universal storytelling. Pawo believes that for international films to shine at the Oscars, they must reflect each country's culture and hold universal values.
