Pawo Choyning Dorji, a Bhutanese director, attracted international funding for his second work 'Bhutan Does Not Have Guns,' notably receiving investments from France, Switzerland, and 'Farewell My Concubine' producer Xu Feng. The film's total budget of around 900,000 USD is triple that of Pawo's previous work and Oscar-nominated 'Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom.' Despite pressure to increase the budget, Pawo insisted that the existing funds were sufficient to create a quality film, even halting further fundraising efforts. His distributor and wife Yao Jingyu supported his decision, highlighting the importance of creativity over excessive funding. The film portrays the chaos that ensues in a tranquil village after the king declares a national election to promote democracy. Even though the director's approach of resisting excessive funding is uncommon, it has proved successful, with the previous film garnering over 7 million NTD at the box office.
