The Biden administration introduced a new rule aimed at addressing excessive heat in the workplace to protect an estimated 36 million American workers from heat-related injuries. The rule would establish the first major federal safety standard of its kind, requiring employers to identify heat hazards, provide training on heat illness symptoms, establish emergency response plans, and offer rest breaks, shade, water, and heat acclimatization for new workers to combat the risks associated with high temperatures. The proposed rule would also increase penalties for heat-related violations significantly, superseding state measures in California, Colorado, Oregon, Minnesota, and Washington.
