In the first debate of the 2024 US election, President Biden and opponent Trump competed to show who was tougher on foreign policy, mentioning Russian President Putin more than ten times. The discussion mainly focused on ending the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, US support for NATO, and whether European countries are contributing enough to combat Russian aggression. Biden promoted his ceasefire plan for Israel's conflict in Gaza, claiming the US is the biggest supporter of Israel. Trump argued that if he were president, Hamas militants would not have invaded Israel, criticizing Biden's approach. Putin himself stated earlier this month that the US election outcome wouldn't matter to Russia and they would work with any president elected by the American people.
