Democrats have urged the US Department of Justice to investigate major oil companies and their trade groups after a congressional probe found evidence of the industry deceiving the public about climate change for decades. The investigation, initiated by Democrats on the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, accused companies like Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Shell, BP, the American Petroleum Institute, and US Chamber of Commerce of engaging in deceptive public relations campaigns while internally acknowledging the role of fossil fuels in climate change since the 1960s. Democrats believe there is sufficient evidence to warrant further investigation into potential violations of federal statutes by these entities.
