A landslide occurred at the mouth of the Qingshui Tunnel of Taiwan Railways on the afternoon of June 21, 2024, causing the 229th New Taroko train to derail after hitting falling rocks, resulting in a fractured hand for the driver and minor injuries for 6 passengers. The derailment site happened to be only 100 meters from the site where the Taroko Express derailed on April 2, 2021. Despite a warning system being in place at the eastbound line, it failed to alert the New Taroko train on the westbound line of the impending danger, leading to discussions on enhancing protective measures by Taiwan Railways following the incident.
