Blackfin Tuna Ban Causes Surge in Port Arrivals; National Quota Exceeded for First Time, to be Deducted Next Year

Reported about 1 year ago

The Ministry of Agriculture announced a ban on blackfin tuna fishing starting on June 12th, leading to a rush by fishermen to catch as many as possible before the ban. This resulted in a significant increase in tuna landings at Donggang Fishing Port in Pingtung. The national total has exceeded 2000 tons, and the excess catch this year will be deducted from next year's quota. There were concerns raised by lawmakers about the short warning period given to fishermen and the lack of support measures, causing losses and negative impact on next year's quota. The Fisheries Agency plans to provide better early warnings and support for fishermen who have already sailed to sea.
