In the midst of what is called the 'bloodiest election year in history,' with nearly 40 candidates killed, the violence has not ceased even after the June 2nd elections in Mexico. Salvador Villalba Flores, the newly elected mayor of Copala in Guerrero state, was fatally shot in the head on a bus on June 17th. The attack was carried out by armed men while he was travelling alone back to Copala from Mexico City. Flores, a retired navy captain, was assassinated at close range, becoming the 23rd acknowledged victim of political violence in the election, with some sources citing as high as 35 or even 251 victims if including consultants, campaign team members, and family.
