Bloomberg: US Officials to Visit Netherlands and Japan to Push for Stronger Restrictions on China's AI Chip Development

Reported about 1 year ago

According to Bloomberg, US Commerce Department officials will visit Japan and the Netherlands to urge both countries to increase restrictions on China's semiconductor industry, further curbing China's ability to produce high-end artificial intelligence (AI) memory chips. The officials will specifically target Chinese companies developing high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, with a focus on limiting the activities of ASML Holding NV and Tokyo Electron Ltd. in China. The Biden administration has been actively seeking to limit China's acquisition and manufacturing of advanced semiconductors to maintain national security, and is looking for support from allies to strengthen these bans. Japan and the Netherlands currently have regulations that are less stringent than those of the US, and a decision on whether to tighten restrictions may be made after the US presidential election in November.
