Blue and White Parties Request Constitutional Interpretation: Opposition MPs Predict 'Partial Unconstitutionality'

Reported 8 months ago

President Tsai Ing-wen announced the Parliament Reform Act on June 24, 2024, and also indicated the intention to request a constitutional interpretation and interim disposition from the Constitutional Court. Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) caucus leader Ke Chien-ming stated that the party caucus, Executive Yuan, and Control Yuan will all request a constitutional interpretation, focusing on procedural unconstitutional issues. The opposition Blue and White parties immediately countered, calling President Tsai a monarchic authoritarian regime and urging the Supreme Court judges not to be influenced by political forces. The Blue and White parties plan to block the parliamentary empowerment law, with the government, parliament, and DPP caucus officially filing for a constitutional interpretation and interim disposition on June 26. The Nationalist Party estimates the final conclusion might be 'partially unconstitutional,' highlighting the crucial role of the Supreme Court judges in the constitutional interpretation battle.
