New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-yi is ineligible for re-election and rumors have emerged regarding a successor favored by him, the current Deputy Mayor of New Taipei Liu Ho-jan. However, Taipei City Deputy Mayor Lee Si-chuan is also seen as a strong contender. A leaked internal KMT poll indicates that Lee Si-chuan is significantly ahead of other potential candidates. DPP New Taipei City Councilor Cho Kuan-ting raised concerns of possible manipulation to suppress Liu Ho-jan. Hou You-yi admitted to seeing the poll but stated it was merely for reference. He later acknowledged seeing the poll and emphasized its use as a reference only.
