Blue Lawmaker Proposes Amending Recall Law to Increase Recall Threshold, Wu Szu-yao: People's Party Unlikely to Become Affiliated Organization Again

Reported about 1 year ago

According to Liberty Times, KMT legislator Hsu Yu-chen has proposed a draft amendment to the Public Official Election and Recall Law, suggesting that recall should not occur within one year of taking office and that the approval votes for recall should exceed the votes received in the election. This is seen as a move to assist Keelung Mayor Ko Chin-lung and the blue camp's recall efforts. DPP legislative caucus secretary-general Wu Szu-yao stated that this is in opposition to public opinion and believes the People's Party will not become a KMT affiliate this time. Wu emphasized that recall is a basic right granted by the Constitution to the people to remove unsuitable leaders or legislators. In response to the highly controversial and political nature of this amendment, the position of the People's Party becomes crucial, with all 8 of their legislators being party-list members unlikely to face recall threats, indicating they may not cooperate with the KMT as an affiliated group or become a political sacrifice for the KMT.
