BNSF Railway reported increased profits, revenue, and shipping volumes in the third quarter, driven by a rise in intermodal and agricultural shipments. The railroad's operating income rose by 13.4% to $2 billion, with a 2.8% revenue increase to $5.9 billion, while expenses decreased by 2%. Although overall volume grew by 8.3%, average revenue per unit fell 5.2% due to lower fuel surcharge income and shifts in business mix. Agricultural shipments surged by 14.1%, but coal traffic declined by 12.5% as natural gas prices affected fuel choices.
