On July 1, 2024, an Air Europa Boeing 787-9 aircraft flying from Madrid, Spain to Montevideo, Uruguay, encountered severe turbulence, resulting in 40 injuries and extensive damage to the cabin. The unexpected turbulence led to passengers being injured and one passenger getting stuck in the overhead bin area. The aircraft had to make an emergency landing in Brazil. Scientists attribute the increasing frequency of such turbulence incidents to climate change, with high-altitude wind speed variations exacerbating the problem.
