The U.S. Justice Department may allow Boeing to avoid criminal prosecution for breaching a 2021 settlement related to the 737 MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019. The department is considering offering Boeing a deferred prosecution agreement that may include a federal monitor to oversee safety improvements. Boeing had violated the 2021 agreement and paid $2.5 billion previously. Victims' relatives criticized the deal and urged prosecutors to seek a fine of nearly $25 billion against Boeing.
