BOJ Likely to Raise Interest Rates to 1.5% by 2026, Says Former Board Member

Reported 2 days ago

Makoto Sakurai, a former Bank of Japan policymaker, predicts the central bank will raise interest rates again by June or July and aims to reach 1.5% within two years. He suggests that rising wages and stable economic growth provide the BOJ with the confidence to continue increasing rates, although domestic political factors could influence timing. The BOJ recently raised short-term rates to 0.5%, the highest level since the 2008 financial crisis, in response to ongoing inflation above its 2% target.
