Amid chaos in Bolivia, the military coup leader was arrested and taken away in a police car on June 26, 2024. The armed forces, led by General Sunicag, forcibly entered the administrative capital, La Paz, breaking into the presidential palace with armored vehicles. The coup was quickly quelled by President Arce appointing a new military leader with the first order to demobilize and withdraw the armed forces. The coup attempt was condemned nationally and internationally, with allegations that the former president and coup instigator Sunicag claimed to have acted on President Arce's orders. Investigations are underway, and severe penalties are promised for all involved in the coup.
