A military coup attempt occurred in Bolivia, where armed soldiers attempted to use tanks to storm the government headquarters in the capital, La Paz, claiming to defend democracy. The former Bolivian army commander, Junica, declared leading the army to occupy the presidential palace to rebuild democracy. President Arce urged people to resist the coup, replaced the army commander, and demanded Junica's forces to withdraw. Local police regained control, arrested Junica, and the coup failed. Leaders from Mexico, Chile, and other Central and South American countries condemned the coup.
