On June 17, 2024, Sudan Red pigment was detected in Indian paprika oil, leading to its direct destruction at the border as per regulations. Taiwan's Food and Drug Administration disclosed the discovery of another batch of violations at the border the next day, including Indian-imported 'Paprika Oleoresin (Oil-soluble) B4' containing Sudan Red No. 4. The list of 13 non-compliant items also included frozen black pomfret from China, with excessive lead content, among others like dried deer placenta powder from Australia and dual-color sweet potato crisps from Malaysia. All non-compliant products are required to be destroyed at the border. Stricter inspections are put in place for all foreign chili products since the previous food safety incident involving Sudan Red in chili powder from China, necessitating 100% inspection for Sudan Red and pesticides. Violators will face destruction. More heavy metal and pesticide violations were discovered, prompting appropriate actions by Taiwan's FDA.
