Brazil Decriminalizes Cannabis with Individuals Allowed Possession of up to '40 Grams or 6 Plants' without Criminal Penalties

Reported 9 months ago

On June 27, 2024, Brazil's Supreme Court decided to decriminalize cannabis, allowing citizens to legally possess up to 40 grams of cannabis without facing criminal penalties. This makes Brazil, with a population of 203 million, the largest country globally to take such a measure and indicates increasing acceptance of cannabis in the country. The ruling will go into effect in a few days and last for 18 months, with further details to be determined by the country's parliament and health authorities. The sale of cannabis, however, remains a criminal offense. Brazil joins over 20 countries globally that have decriminalized or legalized cannabis for recreational use, primarily in Europe and the Americas.
