Due to the influence of the southwest wind, there is a high likelihood of short periods of heavy rain, prompting the Central Weather Bureau to issue a heavy rain warning for 7 counties and cities today at 7:05 AM. These affected areas are Changhua County, Yunlin County, Chiayi City, Chiayi County, Tainan City, Kaohsiung City, and Pingtung County. The bureau warns that heavy rainfall often leads to flooding, a major natural disaster in Taiwan, with typhoons and the lingering front of the southwest wind during the plum rain season being significant contributors to heavy rainfall. The bureau notes that apart from obvious weather systems like typhoons and fronts, small to medium-scale convective systems (e.g., afternoon thunderstorms, squall lines accompanying fronts) and topographical effects (e.g., rainfall in the northeastern region during autumn and winter) can also bring about heavy rain in localized areas, potentially causing landslides, rockfalls, debris flows in mountainous regions and advising precautions for flooding in low-lying areas, river banks, and disasters like flash floods.
