The first quake occurred at 8:40 p.m. in Guofu Township, Hualien County, with a depth of 5.2 kilometers, reaching a max intensity of 4 in Jiqi, Hualien. The subsequent quake of 4.2 in magnitude occurred under a minute later with a depth of 5.4 kilometers, also reaching a max intensity of 4 in Jiqi, Hualien. Taitung, Hualien City, and Aowanda in Nantou felt the quakes at intensity level 1.
