On June 21, 2024, at 6:53 am, a horrific incident occurred as Taiwan Railways Administration's southbound Train No. 229, the new Taroko Express, struck falling rocks inside the Qingshui Tunnel around 4 pm on the same day. The collision left the train stuck in the tunnel, with the driver sustaining fractures and 6 passengers sustaining minor injuries. With the tracks buried in debris and mud, passengers faced difficulties evacuating, covered in mud as they tried to escape. Taiwan Railways has initiated rescue operations, deploying shuttle trains to transport passengers. The incident was further exacerbated by heavy rainfall, and currently, the extent of casualties remains unclear.
