On the morning of June 23, 2024, around 8 a.m., a multiple vehicle collision occurred on the southbound 304.6k section of National Freeway No. 1 in Madou. Three large tour buses were involved in the accident, with the lead bus driven by a man surnamed Zhu reportedly causing the chain reaction due to failure to maintain a safe following distance, resulting in collisions with the buses behind. The total of nearly a hundred passengers, likely on a pilgrimage from Taichung to Tainan, were transferred to other vehicles after the incident. The drivers of the three buses tested negative for alcohol, and the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation. Failure to maintain a safe following distance is often the leading cause of accidents on highways.
