On June 21, 2024, at 6:11 am, Train No. 229 of Taiwan Railways collided with falling rocks in the Hualien and Rendeng section. Following the incident, passengers had to disembark and transfer to another transport. Due to the heavy rain warnings issued by the Central Weather Bureau covering 12 counties and cities nationwide, including the Hualien region, the train accident occurred, leaving passengers stranded in the tunnel. There were approximately 500 passengers on board, six of whom sustained minor injuries in addition to the train driver fracturing his hand. Passengers were gradually evacuated and transported away by shuttle trains. Additional reports highlight that Taiwan Railways has not raised ticket prices in 29 years and other related updates.
