Bridging the Technological Gap: TSMC Overtakes

Reported about 1 year ago

In the world of optoelectronics, silicon photonics and CPO are not new technologies, yet Intel leads in global silicon photonics market share. Why is TSMC seemingly catching up? Industry analysts point to two key factors influencing the adoption of silicon photonics and CPO solutions: semiconductor process integration progress, and CPO production yield and maintenance costs. With efforts from TSMC and its partners, breakthroughs in these obstacles are anticipated. Various companies like Global Foundries and Tower Semiconductor are also active in the silicon photonics field, posing competition to TSMC. However, the penetration rate of silicon photonics in optical transceivers is currently only about 5%.
