With only a few weeks left until the opening of the Paris Olympics, a new study from the UK suggests that traits such as self-centeredness, ruthlessness, and a desire for control - typically seen as 'negative' - may actually contribute to athletes winning medals. Researchers from Nottingham Trent University found that coaches with these negative traits could impact the relationship with athletes. They focused on the 'Dark Triad' of personality traits - narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism, and published their findings in the 'Personality and Individual Differences' journal. Enhancing coach-athlete relationships based on understanding and cooperation could ultimately improve performance and experiences in competitive sports.
