In the early morning of June 27, 2024, 62-year-old Ms. Gao, affectionately known as the ‘Buddhist Chanting Lady,’ was hit from behind by a 20-year-old male rider on a bridge in Yonghe District while riding her bicycle, causing her to crash to the ground with multiple abrasions, a dislocated and fractured left wrist, and symptoms of a possible concussion. Ms. Gao, who has been chanting Buddhist prayers on the streets for nearly two decades, revealed in a recent interview that she has been hit by cars as many as 20 times, but attributed her lack of serious injuries to the protective power of the Buddha. Despite facing skepticism and criticism for her unusual behavior, Ms. Gao is described as a ‘very normal person’ who simply aims to help others and spread Buddha’s teachings.
