Busan, South Korea's second-largest city, has become the country's first major metropolitan area to enter the 'risk of extinction' phase based on the 'extinction risk index' calculated by the Employment Information Institute under the South Korean Ministry of Labor. With 23% of its population over 65, Busan's index of 0.49 marks it as the first major city in South Korea at risk of extinction. The country's low birth rate and aging population have been viewed as a national crisis, with other regions also experiencing population decline.
