In Taipei on June 24, 2024, the Chinese tech giant ByteDance is collaborating with the American chip designer Broadcom to develop a custom ASIC chip for AI acceleration, to be manufactured by TSMC. This partnership helps ByteDance secure high-end chips amidst US-China tensions, following US export restrictions on advanced semiconductors in 2022. Although the chip design is progressing well, it's unlikely that TSMC will start mass production this year. The collaboration aims to reduce procurement costs and ensure a stable supply of high-end chips for ByteDance's AI services, such as the ChatGPT-like chatbot 'DouBao' with 26 million users. Both ByteDance and TSMC declined to comment on the cooperation.
