California lawmakers have approved bills amending the 2004 Private Attorneys General Act, allowing workers to sue their employers over labor violations. The legislation reforms the law by reducing penalties for some employers, requiring correction of violations, and allocating 35% of fines to affected workers. The bills came out of a consensus among Governor Newsom, lawmakers, business groups, and labor leaders to prevent a ballot measure to repeal and replace the law, aiming to improve outcomes for workers and employer compliance.
