California's largest utility, PG&E Corp., anticipates a doubling of power demand by 2040 driven by artificial intelligence and electric vehicles, among other factors. The CEO, Patti Poppe, stated that existing grid infrastructure can handle the increase without requiring a substantial addition of power plants, with current utilization rates at 45% expected to grow to 80%. PG&E is also preparing for wildfires and has reduced equipment-related ignitions by 68% since 2017 to prevent catastrophic blazes that led to the utility's bankruptcy in 2019.
