California will not vote on public housing amendment to state constitution this fall

Reported 6 months ago

Voters in California will not be voting on an amendment to remove Article 34 from the state constitution this fall, a provision requiring voter approval for government-subsidized rental housing. Lawmakers Ben Allen and Scott Wiener reversed course on the initiative, citing timing issues with 12 other ballot measures already set. They noted positive momentum with Senate Bill 469 to address public housing concerns. Article 34 has impeded public housing efforts, leading to legal challenges like the one in Millbrae. Governor Newsom intervened in the situation, and despite this amendment being the first to be removed from the fall ballot, more could follow before the June 27 deadline.
