On June 10, three American citizens and a non-citizen American resident were attacked in Jilin, China, labeled as isolated incidents by the Chinese Foreign Ministry. Another incident on June 24 involved a Japanese school bus where a guide, Ms. Hu Youping, was fatally stabbed while protecting children. Amidst these tragic events, online hate speech and extreme nationalist sentiments have surged across Chinese social media, prompting platforms like Netease and Tencent to crack down. The People’s Daily condemned hate speech, showing the regime's fear of the hatred it might breed. The official nationalism in China controls and distorts public sentiment, while suppressing extreme speech temporarily, causing unease among loyal online patriots questioning authorities' actions.
