Canada Investigating Imposing Surtax on Chinese Electric Vehicle Imports

Reported 8 months ago

Canada's government will start a 30-day consultation on July 2 to consider imposing a surtax on Chinese-made electric vehicles, following concerns of Chinese companies creating a global oversupply. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland highlighted the need to counter China's intentional state-directed overcapacity and unfair competition, aligning with the United States and European Commission's plans for higher import tariffs on Chinese EVs. The consultation will gather input on China's surging EV exports and explore options like changing federal EV purchase rebates and investment restrictions, aiming to prevent Canada from becoming a dumping ground for Chinese oversupply.
