Canada Launches Largest Post-WWII Shipbuilding Investment with Construction of 15 New Destroyers

Reported 12 months ago

On June 27th, 2024, the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) officially began construction of a new generation of Canadian Surface Combatant (CSC) vessels, marking Canada's largest post-WWII shipbuilding investment to date with plans to build 15 new destroyers. The first ship is expected to enter service in the mid-2030s. Based on the British Type 26, these new destroyers will be equipped with the latest weapons and technology, replacing existing vessels and strengthening Canada's naval capabilities. Concerns have been raised about the project's substantial cost and potential impact on other military procurement plans, such as the F-35 and new radar systems, amidst uncertainties about the final budget and design of the CSC program.
