Jim Nickel, the Canadian representative in Taiwan, stated that on average, at least 3 Canadian warships pass through the Taiwan Strait each year, with one already having done so this year; therefore, more are expected. Despite recent warnings from China regarding such actions being seen as provocations, Nickel confirmed that more Canadian warships are likely to appear in the region. Canada, as the chair of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) this year, supports Taiwan's bid to join due to its position in global supply chains. Additionally, Nickel welcomed Taiwanese participation and emphasized the importance of keeping the door open for Taiwan's potential accession to the CPTPP in the future, acknowledging the timely negotiations involved. Furthermore, he highlighted opportunities for Canadian investments in Taiwan, especially in clean energy projects, aiming to attract Taiwanese businesses to the North American market.
