The Ministry of Health and Welfare released the '2023 Cause of Death Statistics' listing cancer as the top cause of death for the 42nd consecutive year, with lung and liver cancer remaining the top two cancer killers for 44 years. COVID-19 dropped from 3rd to 6th place. The top 10 causes of death included cancer, heart disease, pneumonia, cerebrovascular disease, diabetes, COVID-19, hypertension-related diseases, accidents, chronic lower respiratory diseases, and nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephropathy. Cancer and heart disease remained the leading causes, with 75% of total deaths attributed to these 10 causes. Lung cancer deaths increased by 16.6%, while COVID-19 deaths decreased by 38.9%. Officials emphasized the importance of cancer screening and healthy lifestyle choices to combat cancer mortality.
