The Ministry of Health and Welfare in Taiwan revealed the top ten causes of death among the Taiwanese people for 2023, with cancer maintaining its lead for 42 consecutive years. Specifically, lung cancer and liver cancer remained the top two cancers for the 44th consecutive year. The average rate of cancer deaths increased, with one person dying every 9 minutes and 53 seconds, 14 seconds faster than the previous year. Although liver cancer still leads in terms of fatalities, its speed is decreasing, and its numbers are declining, attributed to the rising cancer screening rates. Focus has shifted to lung and liver cancer screenings in recent years, with promising results in early cancer detection and mortality risk reduction. Additionally, COVID-19 dropped from the third to the sixth leading cause of death due to decreased infections and high vaccination rates in Taiwan.
