Carbon Pricing Schedule: Peng Chau-ming Aiming to Complete by the End of October

Reported 8 months ago

President Lai Ching-tai announced the establishment of three major committees, including 'Climate Change,' on June 21, 2024, stating that extreme climate impacts are humanity's greatest challenge. The highly anticipated carbon pricing schedule, led by the Ministry of the Environment, is also racing against time to be completed by the end of October. The initial targets for carbon levy include high-emission industries such as petrochemicals and steel, as well as tech giants like TSMC, Winbond, and UMC, accounting for 54% of total emissions. Minister of the Environment, Peng Chau-ming, indicated that Taiwan will implement this unprecedented system within the year, drawing inspiration from carbon schemes in the UK, Singapore, and Japan, which will be closely monitored by the public.
