Disney has chosen newcomer Catherine Laga‘aia to portray Moana in the live-action adaptation set to release in July 2026. Laga‘aia expressed excitement at the opportunity to represent her Pacific Island heritage and young girls like her. Auli’i Cravalho, who originally voiced Moana, will serve as an executive producer in the new film but felt strongly about passing the role to a young Pacific Islander. The cast also includes John Tui, Frankie Adams, Rena Owen, and Dwayne Johnson, with Thomas Kail directing the movie.
