On June 22, 2024, the Taiwan Affairs Office released regulations on punishing 'Taiwan independence,' where one of the 22 stipulations includes the death penalty for the charge of 'splitting the country.' The Mainland Affairs Council responded that Beijing has no judicial jurisdiction over Taiwan. Former Legislator Guo Zhengliang noted a worrying precedent of Thailand repatriating dissenters to Xinjiang, potentially involving friendly countries, calling the situation 'unbelievable.' Guo pointed out the seriousness of the joint effort between the Taiwan Affairs Office and judicial units, expressing concerns about its implications on Taiwan's diplomacy in the future and the lack of clarification on enforcement boundaries to create intimidation.
