Central Bank Sings Hawkish Tune: 2-Year Certificate of Deposit Interest Rates Hit Over 21-Year High

Reported 8 months ago

On June 19, 2024, the central bank in Taiwan auctioned 2-year certificates of deposit amounting to 25 billion NT dollars with an average weighted interest rate of 1.461%, the highest in over 21 years since February 2003. The market remains cautious about inflation, and opinions on future rate hikes vary, causing the auction for certificates of deposit to be lackluster. With only 569 billion NT dollars attracted for bids, the bidding multiple was 2.28 times, lower than the previous 2.71 times, indicating market apprehension towards potential rate hikes in the third quarter.
