In the 18th century, early hand-cranked chain saws were invented to assist in difficult vaginal births by breaking through parts of pelvic bone and cartilage. The chain saws, considered as an obstetrical prototype, were very different from the woodcutting ones used today. Two doctors, John Aitken and James Jeffray, independently worked on the medical chain saws for childbirth, aiming to remedy dangerous emergency methods used during birth emergencies.
