Changes in Nuclear Power Policy? Wang Hongwei Forewarns DPP No Longer Has Shield After Passing Nuclear Extension Draft

Reported 12 months ago

Economic Minister Guo Zhixuan and TSMC Chairman Zhang Zixian, also appointed as the Vice Convener of the Presidential Climate Change Commission by President Lai Ching-te, have differing views on nuclear power compared to the DPP's anti-nuclear stance. KMT Legislator Wang Hongwei mentioned that once the nuclear extension-related draft is passed, the DPP government will no longer have a shield. While Zhang Zixian advocates for extending Nuclear plants 2 and 3, bringing in the new type of nuclear power plant from Finland, Guo Zhixuan emphasizes that if they meet safety and legal requirements, they will proceed with nuclear power, implying a softening stance towards anti-nuclear views. Wang Hongwei stressed that the law concerning the extension of Nuclear plants 2 and 3 will be reviewed next month, removing the restriction of extension application five years prior. This move would shift accountability to the Executive Yuan, prompting a decision on the future of nuclear energy without the shield of legislation.
