On July 2, 2024, Deputy Premier of the Executive Yuan Cheng Li-chun attended the 35th Academia Sinica Academician Conference to discuss the country's energy policies. Cheng mentioned that discussions on energy may need a new framework and emphasized the importance of addressing nuclear waste disposal and nuclear safety. She stated that diverse opinions will be fully discussed in a committee convened by the President. Cheng highlighted the government's efforts in reducing pollution and promoting green energy, pointing out that while nuclear energy still contributes six percent to Taiwan's energy mix, the focus remains on diversifying green energy sources. She stressed the need for a realistic approach when dealing with nuclear waste and safety issues.
