Following the revelation of corruption allegations against former Taoyuan Mayor and Straits Exchange Foundation Chairman Cheng Wen-tsang, who was involved in corruption related to the Hwalia land development during his tenure as mayor, speculations arose about his removal as SEF Chairman. It was rumored that former Public Television Service Chairman Wu Feng-shan might replace him if Cheng Wen-tsang is dismissed. Amid the scandal, Cheng Wen-tsang maintained his innocence and valued public service over personal gain, vowing to defend his integrity during the judicial process. Insights suggested that Lai Ching-te had initially favored Wu Feng-shan for the SEF Chairman position, but due to intervention by former President Tsai Ing-wen, Cheng Wen-tsang was appointed instead. Additionally, Lai Ching-te reportedly held Cheng Wen-tsang accountable for the DPP's loss in a recent Taoyuan legislative election, contributing to their strained relationship. Consequently, if Cheng Wen-tsang is removed from his position, Wu Feng-shan is likely to succeed him as SEF Chairman.
