Chiang Kai-shek's Response to Bai Chongxi's Proposal to Invade Vietnam in 1949

Reported about 1 year ago

As the Nationalist army faced defeat in 1949 during the Chinese Civil War, Bai Chongxi suggested a plan to invade Vietnam and eliminate Ho Chi Minh to regroup and later counterattack the mainland. However, due to mistrust from Chiang Kai-shek, the plan was not executed. Bai Chongxi's proposal was deemed unrealistic, with historians pointing out the challenges of facing both the communist forces in Vietnam and the French colonial presence there. Despite not moving forward with the plan, Bai Chongxi continued to support Chiang Kai-shek and eventually settled in Taiwan. Taiwan in the end, Bai Chongxi was marginalized and surveilled by Chiang Kai-shek, leading to a rather unhappy ending for the respected military figure.
