In this case shared by lawyer Zhou Nianhui, a filial son and daughter in New Taipei City decided to forego their inheritance rights to let their deceased father's property pass entirely to their mother, but due to lack of proper estate planning, the inheritance ended up going to more distant relatives instead. Under the Civil Code, the order of succession for legal heirs includes spouse, direct descendants, parents, siblings, and grandparents, with closer blood relatives having priority. Unfortunately, by relinquishing their inheritance, the son and daughter unwittingly allowed the property to be inherited by more distant relatives, emphasizing the importance of understanding inheritance laws and planning appropriately.
